Introduction to ICT
ICT stands for Information and Communication Technology. It refers to the use of digital tools and systems such as computers, mobile phones, internet, and other devices to create, store, manage, and share information. ICT plays an important role in modern education, workplace, and personal life.
Importance of ICT in Personal Life and Workplace
1. Personal Life
- Helps in communication (through calls, emails, video chat).
- Supports online learning and self-development.
- Provides entertainment (music, movies, social media).
- Helps in online banking and shopping
2. Workplace
- Used for record-keeping and data analysis.
- Helps in business communication through email and virtual meetings.

ICT in Our Daily Life
ICT is now part of our daily routine. From sending a message on WhatsApp to attending online classes, or making online payments—everything is supported by ICT.
ICT Tools
- Mobile Phones – calling, messaging, internet browsing, apps.
- Tablets – portable device for study and office work.
- TV (Smart/LED) – educational programs, news, entertainment.

Computer System
A computer system consists of hardware and software.
1. Hardware – Physical parts of a computer (CPU, monitor, keyboard, mouse, printer).
2. Software – Programs and applications that run on a computer (Windows, MS Office, apps).
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
CPU is the brain of a computer. It has three main functions:
1. Input – Receives data from devices like keyboard, mouse, scanner.
2. Processing – Converts input data into meaningful information.
3. Output – Shows processed result on monitor, printer, speakers.
Memory of a Computer
RAM (Random Access Memory): Temporary memory used when computer is running. Data is lost when power is off.
ROM (Read Only Memory): Permanent memory that stores important instructions. Data remains safe even after power is off.
Storage Devices
- Primary Storage: RAM and ROM.
- Secondary Storage: Hard Disk, Pen Drive, CD/DVD, Memory Card.
- Cloud Storage: Google Drive, Dropbox.

Starting a Computer:
1. Switch on power supply.
2. Press power button of CPU.
3. Wait for operating system to load.
Shutting Down a Computer:
1. Save all work.
2. Click on Start Menu → Shut Down.
3. Wait till system turns off completely.
4. Switch off power supply.
Preferred Devices and Their Uses
Mouse: Input device used for clicking, pointing, selecting.
- Keyboard: Used for typing text and numbers.
- Scanner: Used to convert physical documents into digital form.
- Webcam : Used for video recording and online meetings.
- Printer: Used for printing documents and images.
Primary Operations of a Computer System
1. Input: Data entry through keyboard, mouse.
2. Processing: CPU processes the entered data.
3. Storage: Information saved in hard disk or external device.
4. Output: Results displayed on monitor or printed on paper.
