Writing Skills: Parts of Speech
1. Parts of Speech
Parts of speech are the categories of words according to their role in a sentence.
Main Parts of Speech:
1. Noun – Name of a person, place, thing, or idea.
Example: teacher, Delhi, book, happiness
2. Pronoun – Replaces a noun.
Example: he, she, it, they
3. Verb – Shows action or state of being.
Example: run, speak, is, are
4. Adjective – Describes a noun or pronoun.
Example: beautiful, tall, red
5. Adverb – Describes a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
Example: quickly, very, slowly
6. Preposition – Shows the relation of a noun/pronoun with other words.
Example: in, on, at, under
7. Conjunction – Connects words, phrases, or sentences.
Example: and, but, or, because
8. Interjection – Expresses strong feeling.
Example: Wow! Oh! Alas!
2. Using Capital Letters
- At the beginning of a sentence.
- For names of persons, places, countries, languages, and religions.
- For titles of books, films, newspapers.
For abbreviations and proper nouns.
